EU High Representative Federica Mogherini stated today that Serbia could expect two chapters to be opened in the accession negotiations with the EU on 14 December– Chapters 32 and 35, and that Brussels would guarantee the implementation of the agreements reached in Brussels between Belgrade and Priština.
"When I was here a few months ago, I said that chapters ought to be opened by the end of the year and we can now tick that off as a completed assignment. What will follow is more intensive cooperation and that is important both for the Serbian people and the European Union," Mogherini said at the joint press conference after the bilateral meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić.
She also commented on the overall achievements in the dialogue between Belgrade and Priština during the past year.
"You can count on me personally as well as the European Union to guarantee implementation of the agreements and continuation of the dialogue to both sides," said Mogherini, who took part in the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Belgrade.
According to her, Serbia has a partner in the European Union for the safety, security and prosperity of the entire region.
"That is not only in the interest of Serbia and the region, but also of the EU," she emphasised.
She noted that the cooperation between the region and the EU is also visible on a day-to-day basis concerning the issues such as refugees and fight against terrorism and radicalisation.
"There are no borders there, we need each other and we have to cooperate," Mogherini said.
In addition, she spoke highly of Serbia's role in the region, stressing that it has not been merely symbolic, but that specific steps have been made and that the European spirit at its best has been displayed.
Commenting on Serbia's chairmanship of the OSCE, she assessed that Serbia has done an excellent job.
"The main message of the OSCE is cooperation, that is the basis of our security, joint work in the region," Mogherini concluded.
